Lead Engineer- Commercial Laser

SUMMARY:

Our client, OFS Specialty Photonics, a Furukawa Company, is the industry leader in optical fiber design or modification for highly customized applications. OFS develops FOCUSEDFIBER solutions; the right fibers, cables and other specialty optical fiber products to meet the needs of established and growing industries. OFS has an immediate need for a LEAD ENGINEER who will be responsible for the manufacturing process development of the overall New Product Development (NPD) portfolio and to design a reliable, capable manufacturing process for the commercial laser product portfolio. This position will be a key member of the NPD team to insure new product prototypes and meet manufacturing readiness requirements.  He or she will be required to work closely with and lead Product Development Engineers during the design and development process, as well as defining reliability plans and testing to meet customer requirements.  This person will work in collaboration with the production and operations team to deliver prototypes and meet manufacturing readiness requirements to transfer successful new products to the production team.  He or she will be charged with meeting critical NPD metrics; e.g., the ability to meet milestone and customer prototype delivery dates requested, stay within budgetary constraints, as well as meet manufacturing readiness requirements. This position is the critical “Go To” Technical Lead Support role for decision making as it relates to product costing, global manufacturing strategy, supply chain and other quality and manufacturing issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design reliable capable manufacturing processes for product portfolios. Develop in-depth understanding of High Power Modules and laser components and other products, including principles of operation, measurements, test methods, and reliability required in numerous applications. He or she will also become knowledgeable of existing manufacturing processes while maintaining a working knowledge of market applications, customers, and design needs.   You will conduct experiments related to research and development, support measurements, test methods and reliability testing plans. Together with collecting and distilling relevant experimental results, you will propose and write application notes as they relate to manufacturing and measurement methods.  You will develop a strong interaction with customers and have the ultimate responsibility for delivery of prototypes on schedule.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

A formal education in Optics, Physics, or related field is required. A Masters Degree is preferred with at least 6+ years “hands-on” experience. Global customers require excellent verbal and written communication skills; previous experience with Japanese companies is a plus. There must be a willingness to thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial technology driven culture.  A demonstrated “hands on” engineering approach and experience with New Product Development is a must. Should also have experience in building IP portfolio and in defense of same. Ability to demonstrate experimental experience in working with light propagation in optical fibers and a broad understanding of and ability to apply physical, geometrical and quantum optical principles.  The candidate will be a strong mentor in science and engineering.

COMPENSATION:

Base compensation will be in the $100,000 to $115,000 range but will be commensurate with the background and experience of the candidate. This position is bonus eligible.  Relocation assistance is available.
