POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER – OPTICAL COMMUNICATION AND SPACE DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (EXPERIMENTAL)Posted by: The University of SydneyPosted date: 2012-Jul-05
Location: Sydney
CUDOS SCHOOL OF PHYSICS REFERENCE NO. 829/0512 The University of Sydney is Australia's premier University with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7500 permanent staff supporting over 49,000 students. CUDOS, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems, has a long standing collaborative relationship with its industry partner Finisar Australia. We have recently been awarded a new ARC linkage project which will extend this collaboration for another three years. We wish to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (level A) or a Research Fellow (level B) for this project. The research collaboration is based on Finisar's world leading wavelength selective switching technology based on Liquid Crystal on Silicon. In our successful previous research projects, Finisar and CUDOS jointly developed the WSS device into a versatile pulse shaping device and extended its functionality. This device is now being sold by Finisar as the WaveShaper. The goal of the current project is based on our previous research with the aim to extend and enhance this technology for deployment in future space division multiplexed optical telecommunication networks. You will work at the boundary of device science, applied mathematics and optical communications research and digital signal processing. You will develop methods for coupling to multi-mode or multi-core fibres using the LCOS and devise strategies to minimise cross-talk. You will perform transmission experiments based on different formats, such as OFDM and coherent modulation. At the receiver you will employ digital signal processing to eliminate impairments such as inter-channel cross-talk, to allow for optimum performance. You must have:
For appointment at level B you must provide evidence of the independent research capacity associated with at least two years postdoctoral research track record. Highly desirable will be: experience with experimental optical communication systems and digital signal processing in particular coherent modulation formats and space division multiplexing; experience with multi-mode fibre propagation and experimental experience of building and using spectral pulse-shaping devices. The position is full-time fixed term for two years subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Futher offer may be available subject to funding, need and performance. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees. Remuneration package: $92K-$124K p.a. (which includes a base salary range level A to B of $78K-$105K p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation). The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Visa sponsorship and some support towards relocation expenses may be available if required. All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website.Visit sydney.edu.au/positions and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
