Here within Lockheed Martin's Aculight Business we are looking for an Optical Engineer who is a true Laser enthusiast to join our team. Whether it’s restoring function to damaged nerves in the human body, increasing the visibility for helicopter pilots in brownout conditions or developing next generation high power lasers for Directed Energy, Lockheed Martin Aculight delivers innovative laser solutions for the defense, aerospace, industrial, scientific and medical markets. This exciting work will include leading teams in design and development of fiber laser systems that are field deployable in military and commercial environments. The Staff Optical Engineer will work in an engineering environment where research and bleeding edge innovation and are part of our culture. The engineer will be a technical leader on many projects. The engineer will perform functions to develop, model, design, and simulate optical systems powered by various types of lasers which include fiber lasers, Optical parametric oscillators (OPO's), semiconductor lasers, diode pumped solid state lasers, fiber-laser-based lasers etc. The engineer will evaluate potential new tools and equipment for effectiveness and relevance. The engineer will perform trade-off analysis. Keeping current on developments in the Laser Industry will be very important in this role. The engineer will attend and may present at leading industry conferences. The engineer will mentor and help to develop skills of less experienced members of our team. The engineer will collaborate extensively local teammates and may also correspond and share best practices with teams from other groups across Lockheed Martin. The engineer will apply their extensive technical expertise to develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. The engineer will exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives and approaches to assignments. The Engineer's completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results. The engineer will guide the successful completion of major programs and will function in a project leadership role and represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. The engineer will interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Required skills: Minimum requirements for this position will include a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or related Optics/Optical technical field and 9 + years of professional level experience. A minimum of 3-5 years of optical analysis is required. Experience with modeling programs like Zemax or FRED is required. Experience designing and development of optical systems from concept through sustained production is required. The ability to work effectively in a team is required. The ability to effectively lead technical projects is required. Strong organization skills are required. Strong verbal & written communications skills are required. Desired skills: An MS level degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or closely related technical field is desired. Experience designing and development of laser systems from concept through sustained production is desired. Experience with analysis software including MATLAB, Mathcad, and/or LabVIEW is desired. Experience with design and development of non-linear optical systems is desired. Experience working with Optical parametric oscillators (OPO's) and Second harmonic generation (SHG aka frequency doubling) is desired. Familiarity with fiber handling, fiber non-linearity and designing fiber laser systems. Experience with MS Project may be desirable.
