Laser Safety Officer / Health Physicist

Reporting to the Health Physics Manager in the Radiation Protection Group (RPG), this position has responsibilities for several program areas.  The successful candidate will work to facilitate research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) while ensuring safety and compliance with applicable laws, regulations and contract requirements.

This person will serve as the Laser Safety Officer for LBNL and as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for LBNL non-ionizing radiation safety program. In addition, this individual will also serve as an RPG health physicist providing comprehensive ionizing radiation protection support in assigned areas and activities at LBNL.

Main responsibilities include: provision of technical support to customers; hazard reviews and evaluations; determination of appropriate controls and monitoring; preparation and maintenance of work authorizations, policies and procedures; personnel exposure monitoring; audit of work areas and facilities; response to emergencies and incidents; management and provision of related safety training.

Specifically, your responsibilities are:
• Manage, with assistance from the alternate Laser Safety Officer, all aspects of the laser safety program and the non-ionizing radiation safety program.
• Develop and maintain programs in assigned subject areas ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards. Evaluate performance of the programs to identify potential improvements. Develop/update/revise policies and procedures as required.
• Develop and implement appropriate and effective self-assessment programs to ensure continued compliance with applicable regulations. Communicate results to RPG management and independently develop necessary corrective actions.
• Develop and maintain close relationships with researchers and other laboratory personnel, anticipating their safety needs and assisting in planning and implementing their research/work by furnishing hazard control assistance.
• Perform hazard reviews and analysis, develop safety controls as required to establish safe work environments, and maintain active work authorizations.
• Analyze, interpret and recommend safety engineering and safety concepts required to maintain a safe work place for employees.
• Maintain all training required by federal/state regulations and EH&S division polices.
• Keep up-to-date knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and standards.
• Respond to emergencies and incidents at locations managed by LBNL.
• Provide safety training in areas of expertise to LBNL employees and subcontractors, as required.
• Serve on multi-disciplinary teams as needed to address issues of institutional importance.
• Keep RPG management apprised of developments in the field as well as any challenges encountered.
• Perform other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor.

What you need to succeed:
• Bachelor’s degree in a specialty closely aligned with relevant programs under responsibility and at least 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Extensive working knowledge of laser, non-ionizing and ionizing radiation safety.
• Ability to apply expertise in a creative and effective way to a broad range of difficult and complex assignments.
• Ability to work directly with lab personnel of varying backgrounds and education.
• Experience working in a research and collaborative environment.
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical information.
• Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels of the organization.
• Demonstrated computer literacy.

Nice to have, but not required:
• Certification by the Board of Laser Safety
• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
